Review

Many families have been vacationing at the Four Seasons Punta Mita since it opened, in 1999, and they show no signs of growing weary. Their fierce devotion isn’t due simply to the pretty views, seamless service, two swimmable beaches (a rarity on Mexico’s Pacific Coast) and excellent food. It is rooted in the Four Season chain’s consistency. Guests know that everything will be exactly as it should be. One Indagare member and mother remarks that the Four Seasons is the only place in the world where she can relax.

Consistency is often cited against the Four Seasons: What’s the point of traveling to exotic new destinations if the amenities are the same as in more familiar venues? While I agree up to a point, I think that for a traveling family, familiarity and reliability can be more important than authenticity and charm. The Four Seasons does have local touches, including hand-woven Mexican carpets in the rooms, killer chiles rellenos in the restaurants, and a knowledgeable tequila sommelier who was literally born in the back of an agave truck. Children can learn to surf (the area is known for its breaks), to make nachos and to decorate a piñata, and families can visit the local wildlife preserve to swim with sea lions.

Most importantly, everyone from toddlers to teens to grandparents will find something to do. Grown-ups can hit the spacious, well-equipped gym, relax at the excellent spa or escape to a private cabana by the peaceful adults-only pool to sun and sip margaritas. Golf nuts can hit the two Jack Nicklaus courses. Teens can cool off in the game room, complete with comfy couches for watching movies and an exhaustive stock of video games. And a popular (and complimentary) kids’ club offers a schedule of activities sure to keep any grade-schooler happily entertained. Both adults and kids will enjoy lounging by the gently moving, well-shaded “river” that encircles one of the buildings and provides endless opportunities for slow-mo tubing.

The Four Seasons’ rooms are all equipped with flat-screen televisions, deep soaking tubs, high-speed Internet access and balconies or private patios. Even the standard rooms are big enough for families (there is a pull-out sofa bed in each of the king rooms), but parents with kids may be more comfortable in connecting rooms or suites, the latter providing the added luxury of a private plunge pool and a second full bathroom. Beachfront rooms are better for families with small children than for honeymooners seeking privacy. The latter should book one of the suites situated on dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean. For larger groups, villas are also available. The look here, as opposed to the St. Regis’ romantic South of France vibe, is more masculine, with marble floors, dark stained woods and plantation shutters. The property is also gradually renovating its rooms and common spaces.

A big draw at the Four Seasons is the flawless service. Everyone from the concierges to the landscapers attends to guests’ every need without being intrusive. When I arrived, I was five months pregnant. Waiting for me in my room was a maternity sleeping pillow and a note saying that since my baby was already comfortable, they thought I should be, too. It’s that kind of attention to detail that fosters the loyalty noted earlier. After a few days at the resort, I count myself one of its many fans.

Indagare Tip

If traveling during school vacations, couples should reserve cabanas at the adult pool to have some time away from splashing children.

Who Should Stay

The Four Seasons Punta Mita deserves its reputation as a first-rate family resort, but couples will also appreciate its extensive amenities.
