On a busy cobblestoned side street, just a four-minute walk from the famous Parroquía, a pair of arched wooden doors tucked into a line of colonial buildings conceals a charming, romantic oasis in the heart of San Miguel de Allende’s historic center: the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada.
Comprised of six renovated 17th- and 18th-century mansions, which are spread over several streets and are filled with lush courtyards, talavera-tiled terraces and hidden patios, the Belmond offers just 37 unique rooms and suites. Spacious and homey, these rooms combine modern luxury with local design touches and antique pieces like carved wooden headboards and dressers, wrought-iron chandeliers and traditional fabrics. The result: the impression that you have stepped back in time and are living in your very own colonial casona.
The main Casa Principal offers the all-day Andanza restaurant, where foliage blooms under a bright skylight and the menu combines traditional Mexican flavors with international flair, and the cozy Blue Bar, with its must-try is the prickly pear margarita. Some of the bedrooms are located in the Casa Principal, while the rest are scattered across four other mansions: Casa Caballo, Casa Fuente, Casa Parque and Casa Palma. The latter features a garden oasis bordered by stone arches and tropical flowers, with a modest outdoor pool and lounge space, the perfect spot to while away a sunny afternoon. A second restaurant, Restaurante del Parque, is just a few blocks away and invites guests in with live music performances against a backdrop of cacti and agave trees. Other on-property amenities include the Sazón cooking school and the Laja spa (a fitness studio, three treatment rooms and a beauty salon); off-property, the concierge can arrange history- and art-focused walking tours, as well as scenic tours by ATV, hot air balloon and horseback.
While some travelers, especially families with young children and groups of friends, may prefer the resort-like facilities and buzzy energy of the Rosewood, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada remains one of the city’s finest properties, because it is warm and authentic in its reflection of the history, culture and style of San Miguel de Allende.
