Review
The chic and intimate Hotel Matilda has 32 rooms spread throughout three buildings and an inviting lobby with carefully chosen coffee-table books and furnishings in subdued colors. Rooms are effortlessly elegant and comfortable, decorated in monochromatic palettes with clean lines.
The buzzy bar above the lobby, Bar Müi, is well-known for its creative mixology and has a small outdoor area. Moxi, inspired by local ingredients, is next to the pool area and is worth a meal even for those staying elsewhere; a cool crowd lingers here over leisurely lunches (reservations are a must). The award-winning subterranean spa boasts a holistic approach to treatments and features Natura Bisse as well as their own products made in the in-house apothecary.
While its modern décor may seem out of place in a colonial city (the property was quite controversial when it first opened), the hotel’s art focus fits perfectly with San Miguel’s creative vibe. Owner Harold Stream III has one of the best Latin American art collections, and many of his prized works are on display throughout the hotel. The property also welcomes temporary exhibitions, and some of the pieces from such shows—like the Claudio Limon in the restaurant and Spencer Tunick near the bathroom—become permanent. And as a founding partner of San Miguel de Allende’s annual Market of Arts & Gastronomy Festival, Hotel Matilda plays host to one-of-a-kind culinary events in the city.
The boutique nature of the hotel means that the staff works hard to truly personalize your stay. Two highlights include apothecary classes and mixology workshops led by the bartender.
Who Should Stay
Travelers with an affinity for food or art, as well as couples who prefer a more boutique, modern or trendy hotel, will love Hotel Matilda. Families will feel more comfortable at the sprawling Rosewood located a few minutes away, as it has more amenities for children.
