Local Picks: Washington DC

The nation's capital has seen flurry of excitement over the past few years, particularly in its restaurants, due in no small part to the president and first lady's tendency to dine out in the district. In addition to world-class establishments maintaining their refined reputation (see: Blue Duck Tavern, Rasika), the nation's first couple have been known to frequent some hipster joints. So it's not a coincidence that a bevvy of new casual—but truly excellent—eateries have popped up in formerly nondescript or even depressed areas, like around 14th and U Streets, a hot new neighborhood that's brimming with innovation.

In-the-know locals and visitors are headed to previously unremarkable areas to feast on spicy fried cashews with kaffir lime leaf at Doi Moi, grilled hangar steak with Japanese mustard and eel sauce from Rose's Luxury and caramelized onion and goat cheese buttermilk biscuits at Baked & Wired. Here are some dining spots that are favorites with savvy Washingtonites, be they POTUS or not.
