Cliff Walk
One of Newport’s top attractions is the three-and-a-half mile walking trail that winds along the shoreline where many of the Gilded Age “Cottages” were built, so walkers are treated to the glorious New England coast on one side and the extravagant mansions and grounds on the other. The path begins at First Beach on Memorial Boulevard and runs south with exit points at various avenues and ends at Bellevue Avenue. While the walk covers flat terrain, visitors are warned to watch out for cliff drops and poison ivy.
Day Trip: Block Island
Block Island, approximately 12 miles south of mainland Rhode Island and 14 miles east of Montauk, is a charming vacation community filled with historic homes and boasting pretty beaches. The ferry to Block Island from Newport takes about one hour and departs from Narragansett. There are restaurants and shops in Old Harbour and plenty of hiking and biking trails throughout, including the Clay Head Nature Trail and Mohegan Bluffs Trail.
Indagare Tours: Historical Walking Tours
Indagare members can contact our Bookings Team to arrange private neighborhood tours around Newport. Walks in town feature the colonial houses and meeting place for revolutionaries, pirates and early Americans, while tours of the Bellevue mansions will be via car and describe the Gilded Age buildings and lifestyles.
International Tennis Hall of Fame
Built as a “shrine to the ideals of the game,” the International Tennis Hall of Fame occupies the Newport Casino where the very first U.S. Open match was played in 1881. The building and its museum were recently restored and today you can not only watch matches on the famous courts and explore the history of the sport in the museum, which is a National Historic Landmark and one of the best examples of Victorian shingled architecture in the country, but you can even play on the hallowed grass courts.
Newport International Polo Series
The Newport polo series takes place each year from June through September. Most matches are played on Saturday afternoons and they take place at Glen Farm in Portsmouth, which is a short drive north of Newport.
Newport Mansions
The Preservation Society of Newport County oversees the protection, preservation and presentation of the great historic mansions of Newport and has done so for more than sixty years. Among the extravagant houses that are worth a visit are The Breakers, the 70-room summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, and Marble House, a National Historic Landmark, which was inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Many of the houses have audio tours that tell the colorful stories of past residents. For those interested in fashion, Rosecliff features a costume collection, which includes pieces by Chanel and Givenchy. If you plan to visit more than one mansion, consider buying the Newport Mansion Experience pass, which allows access to five historic houses.
Tip: Personal tours can be arranged for small groups. Indagare members can contact our Bookings Team to help arrange visits.
Newport's Beaches
First Beach, or Easton's Beach as it is commonly known, is a beloved spot for kayaking and surfing and during the summer, boasts a snack bar that serves lobster rolls as well as a Del's Lemonade truck. Gooseberry Beach sits on the southern end of peninsula, closer to Castle Hill Inn and Bailey’s Beach. Second Beach is slightly less busy, set further east of town near the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.
Rough Point
Doris Duke was the only daughter of an early energy industrialist who founded Duke University. When Mr. Duke died young, he left his fortune to his 12-year-old daughter who would become a supremely wealthy patron of charities and, in particular, of Newport preservation.
Duke's Newport home has been turned into a museum, featuring the house and décor as she left it. The guided tour (the only way to see the house's interior) lasts about 75 minutes and runs a few times each day. Special exhibitions have included curated looks at her art collection and personal wardrobe.
The spectacular gardens, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man behind New York City's Central Park, look out to the sea.
Sailing Schools and Tours
Newport is known as a sailing Mecca and has been knighted the Sailing Capital of the World. Indagare members can contact our Bookings Team to arrange private sailing charters, tours by water, boating lessons and arrange for fishing charters.
Trinity Church
Built in 1698, this Episcopal church in the center of Newport still holds Sunday services and is the setting for many beautiful weddings. The gleaming white, pointed spire that rises above Queen Anne’s Square acts as the de facto center of town. Inside, light streams in from multi-paned windows and the wooden pews sit in boxes facing each other, a reminder of when families staked claim to their own sections. The large wooden chandeliers that hang over the nave give a sense of how the church looked when it was solely lit by candles.
