3 Reasons to Visit the South Street Seaport, NYC’s Coolest New Neighborhood

Once an overlooked area near the Financial District and along the East River, New York City’s historic South Street Seaport has long had charming bones—cobblestoned streets, low-rise brick buildings and an old-fashioned allure—but it was mostly populated by Wall Street types and tourists, and hardly a cultural destination for local New Yorkers. That is, until now. In the past few years, real estate developers and restaurateurs have staked claims in the blossoming district, and the first wave of new openings—including a Cipriani-backed hotel and an outpost of Milan’s most famous fashion boutique—have just opened. Here are some of the best reasons to venture to the South Street Seaport this fall.

1. A Cool, Italy-inspired New Hotel

This summer, the fourth generation of the Cipriani dynasty (of Harry’s Bar in Venice, among others) opened their first New York property, Mr. C Seaport in the South Street Seaport. The 60-room hotel is located one block from the East River, and the best of its mostly-white, airy accommodations have beautiful views of the Brooklyn Bridge and water. The hotel’s signature restaurant, Bellini, serves classic Italian food in a relaxed, stylish atmosphere. It’s the perfect hideaway for New Yorkers hoping to escape to the Riviera for an evening.

2. A Fashion Powerhouse Opens its Doors

Hotly anticipated, the first state-side location of Milan’s original concept store, 10 Corso Como, debuted in September and immediately became a destination for local and visiting fashionistas. Founded in 1991 by fashion editor and former editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, Carla Sozzani, 10 Corso Como has 10 locations worldwide, and its 28,000-square-foot South Street Seaport space is surely one of the best. The store, which also has an Italian café and beautiful garden, is filled with well-curated fashion, books, accessories and art—including an exhibit of 45 Helmut Newton photographs now on view.

3. Downtown’s “It” Venue

Opened in July, the 1.5-acre Pier 17 was perhaps NYC’s most exciting entertainment venue of the summer. Jutting out into the East River, Pier 17 offers stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Governors Island, the World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty—all of which are best observed from the venue’s sprawling rooftop. The rooftop has an impressive concert series lined up and in winter, it will transform into an ice-skating rink and winter market. Plus, Pier 17 is primed to become a mecca for foodies, with restaurants from big-name chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Andrew Carmellini and David Chang all set to open in 2019.
