The Standard East Village

This eccentric hotel stands out as an unexpected find in the East Village, embracing the village’s innate bohemian and artistic feel, with a playful edge typical of Standard Hotel Group.

At 21 stories tall, The Standard, East Village stands out amidst the East Village’s low-rise apartments, and the Standard brand has done much to make it feel playful—like a friend’s home in downtown NYC. The hotel underwent a complete overhaul by André Balazs’ Standard Hotel Group when they purchased it in 2013 as well as a refresh in 2023 that included new carpets, refreshed bathrooms and new chairs and desks in many hotel rooms, plus nods to the 70s, bohemian style through Bauhaus shapes and retro colors.

Guests enter through one of the original tenement style buildings into a cozy lobby with beautiful tiling, original stained-glass and a small check-in counter. The modern rooms are on the small side and furnished with sleek furniture pieces. Comfortable beds are outfitted with Italian sheets and down pillows. Most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the corner rooms have unrivaled views of either the Empire State Building or Manhattan’s East Side. While the hotel does not have its own gym, guests are provided with day passes to the Crunch gym across the street. The hotel often hosts brand activations, so don’t be surprised if you pass people in the hall dressed in quintessential East Village funky attire.

For all-day dining, visit the Café Standard, which has a street-side patio for people watching during the summer. Also in the summer guests can duck into The Garden for a cocktail or alfresco dining. Not for the faint of heart, playful NO BAR is open on the weekends, serving up strong cocktails, frequent DJs and a downtown NYC vibe.

A word of advice, if it’s a sunny summer day, be sure to close the window blinds before leaving or the room can get quite warm.
