Review

Located on the top nine floors of the historic Meier & Frank Building, a former department store, the Nines is Portland’s most luxurious design hotel. Welcoming guests in its eighth-floor lobby, the Nines is centered around a large, courtyard-like space with ample seating areas and a glass roof. The light-filled entryway channels an eclectic modern aesthetic with vibrant pieces like bright purple rugs and yellow suede couches. In one corner is the hotel’s all-day restaurant, Urban Farmer, which serves seasonal cuisine using ingredients from local farms.

All 331 rooms at the Nines abide by the whimsical décor of the lobby and a color scheme of silver, white and turquoise. The rooms feature tufted headboards, flat screen TVs, spacious marble bathrooms with rainfall showers and—most noteworthy—stunning views of Portland. While the décor occasionally tries to be too glamorous (jewel-toned lamps, shimmery wallpaper), the Nines is undoubtedly the nicest design hotel in the city. Those who need a little extra pampering should splurge on a Club room. Guests staying in these accommodations have access to the Club Lounge, which offers snacks and an open bar throughout the day and into the evening.

In addition to Urban Farmer, the Nines also boasts a rooftop restaurant, Departure. Highly regarded, Departure is located on the 15th-floor and serves Asian-inspired cuisine in an über sleek setting with views of the city, Willamette River and Mount Hood.

An additional onsite amenity at the hotel is a very large gym, which is equipped with the latest fitness equipment. The Nines does not have a spa, but Indagare can recommend nearby salons and massage parlors for those who want treatments.
