Review

First opened under a different name in 1909, the Sentinel occupies two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in downtown Portland. After changing hands several times over the decades, the hotel was purchased by Provenance Hotels and reopened in 2014 after a $6 million renovation, which transformed the iconic property into a grand retreat, complete with all the trappings of a modern luxury hotel. The décor, from the entryway with intricate crown molding and green leather armchairs to the bar with mounted deer heads, is traditional and instilled with elements of Portland history.

The forest green hallways at the Sentinel are lined with black-and-white photographs of cultural icons, including everyone from Martin Luther King Jr. to Sid Vicious. The 100 rooms are done in the same moss green color with white trim and cream-colored furnishings. Beds are accented with Pendleton flannel blankets, walls feature framed ferns from the Columbia River Gorge and the best rooms boast working fireplaces. One can’t-miss perk: the room service menu that includes pints from Portland’s most famous ice cream shop, Salt + Straw.

With ample ballrooms, the Sentinel is a popular place for events and meetings, but leisure travelers still appreciate the spacious gym and onsite restaurants. The lounge, Jackknife, channels a gentlemen’s club aesthetic with chevron pattern wood–paneled walls, leather armchairs and black-and-white artwork, and serves sophisticated bar fare. Jake’s Grill offers classic Pacific Northwest dishes and is the more upscale option.
