Review

Prior to The Allison Inn & Spa’s arrival, the Willamette Valley was one of the most revered wine regions in the United States, but one that lacked a hotel suited to the luxury traveler. Lovers of the valley’s world-class Pinot Noirs rejoiced when the 85-room hotel opened its doors in 2009, offering luxe accommodations and a well-rounded host of pampering amenities, including a spectacular restaurant, beautiful swimming pool and spa. Plus, thanks to its location among rolling vineyards, the hotel is often shrouded in a soft mist, making it even more picturesque.

Located 25 miles southwest of Portland and just over a one-hour drive from the Portland airport, the Allison Inn & Spa is a blissful mountain retreat. Set on 35 acres of manicured gardens and vineyards, the wood-and-stone hotel blends seamlessly with its environment. While the setting feels remote, there are over 200 wineries that are within a 20-minute drive of the property.

The property’s 77 rooms and eight suites are simple and feature a muted color palette of honey gold and light brown. Designed to maximize comfort and ensure relaxation, all the accommodations have fireplaces, soaking tubs and intimate window seats that look out over the vineyards and gardens. For a touch of local charm, each room is stocked with a complimentary snack basket, which is stocked with Oregon-made products like chocolate-covered hazelnuts and dried berries.

The Allison places an emphasis on wellness with several pampering amenities. The property boasts a large indoor swimming pool, whirlpool and sauna and steam rooms, as well as a well-equipped fitness center and spectacular spa. On Sundays in the summer, the hotel runs alfresco yoga sessions in the garden.

Perhaps The Allison’s most compelling attribute is its culinary program, which is headed by Chef Sunny Jin, who formerly worked under Thomas Keller at Napa’s French Laundry and Ferran Adria at El Bulli. The all-day gourmet restaurant, JORY, serves farm-to-table cuisine and boasts an impressive wine list with over 850 varietals from the Willamette Valley. Many of the restaurant’s ingredients are sourced from the chef’s garden, where he grows things like heirloom vegetables and tests out growing produce not indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. The restaurant churns out reliably excellent cuisine; dinner might feature such entrées as Muscovy duck cassoulet with beans, housemade sausage and parmesan breadcrumbs or Oregon lamb porterhouse with chickpea gratin, merquez, feta and braised greens.

Who Should Stay

Travelers looking for a relaxed trip to one of the United States’ premier wine countries (the Willamette Valley is less crowded than Napa and Sonoma) and those looking to add-on time in the country to a visit to Portland.
