Review

Aspen’s most talked about hotel is actually quite old – 125 years, to be exact. Built during the city’s silver boom, the Jerome remained open from boom to bust, playing host to European aristocracy, Hollywood celebrities and East Coast socialites over the years.

Under the management of Auberge, a top-to-bottom, multi-million-dollar renovation ensued. The hotel reopened during Christmas 2012, featuring stylish new rooms and restaurants that invoke the property’s charming Old West roots but please a New West traveler. Accommodations feature traditional crown moldings, masculine burnished-leather bedframes and archival prints from the Aspen Historical Society. Large marble bathrooms include double vanities as well as separate soaking tubs, ideal for sore après-ski legs. While the overall vibe is decidedly Old World, guests are spoiled with modern comforts and technology as well as the size of the accommodations, the smallest of which averages over 500 square feet.

Though guests may wish to retreat to their spacious and stylish rooms, Hotel Jerome is also quite the social hub with several on-property dining and drinking options to enjoy. The hotel is home to Prospect, The Living Room, J-Bar, Bad Harriet, The Summer Garden and Felix Roasting Co. Prospect, their main restaurant, recently became a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant, whereas the cozy Living Room and and historic J-Bar focus on providing a social spot to grab drinks with an après scene kicking into effect around 5:00pm. For families more interested in playing than cocktailing, the Jerome also features a kids’ playroom equipped with video games, movies and toys to keep kids entertained.

The Jerome has a small spa offering a full menu of services, as well as a compact fitness center and outdoor pool and hot tub, sufficiently heated for even a February swim. But most guests get their exercise the old-fashioned way – on the slopes in the winter and mountains in the summers. While the Jerome may be one of the furthest properties from the Aspen base, it’s only a few blocks away and a fleet of SUVs chauffeured by charming cowboy-hatted bellboys to whisk guests there and back on demand. Old West allure blended with modern-day luxury – what a treat.

Who Should Stay

Couples who want an updated throwback to Aspen’s olden days and appreciate the masculine Ralph Lauren look. Families are also welcome and can take advantage of the three-bedroom residences or more modern and sleeker three-bedroom penthouses.
