Amangani
Indagare Travel reviews the luxury western hotel Amangani in Jackson Hole, Wyoming: a Peaceful, panoramic, adventurous escape.
Caldera House
Caldera House is an intimate boutique hotel at the base of the slopes in Teton Village, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and delivers unparalleled convenience for skiers, as well as a stunning Scandinavian-influenced design.
Four Seasons Jackson Hole
Situated at the base of mountains that attract dare-devil skiers in the winter and nature enthusiasts in the summer, Four Seasons Jackson Hole is all about unabashed pampering, from complimentary s’mores and hot chocolate in the afternoon to heated robes and slippers for guests who brave the alfresco hot tub in subzero temperatures. With 124 guest rooms and 60 privately owned two- to five-bedroom residences, the Four Seasons is one of Jackson Hole’s biggest resorts and is housed in Wyoming’s largest structure, zigzagging along the base of the mountain. But thanks to public spaces featuring stone-clad fireplaces, couches arranged in small groups, an impressive personal art collection and a warm palette of chocolate browns and deep reds, the hotel feels surprisingly cozy. Large picture windows open onto the stunning panoramas of Rendezvous Mountain.
Outfitted with gas fireplaces, oversized bathrooms, overstuffed ottomans and armchairs and lots of light-wood detailing, the large guest rooms (the smallest measures 500 square feet) are enclaves of calm. This is particularly the case in the winter, when you’re tempted to hole up there, wrapped in one of the soft throws, reading a good book by the fire. All but three of the rooms have balconies, which either face the interior resort, village and valley or look up at the. For the best views, request one on the top floors.
Because of its location in the midst of Teton Village, within walking distance of restaurants and après-ski spots like Alpenhof and Mangy Moose, the Four Seasons gets a lot of traffic, especially in the winter. The on-site restaurants, which include the Westbank Grill and Handle Bar, are popular lunch options (both accept reservations, a rarity in Jackson Hole), and the outdoor terrace, equipped with Adirondack chairs and space heaters, is packed with skiers after the lifts close. The atmosphere is congenial and—as befits the laid-back Wyoming ethos—a touch less formal than you would normally expect from Four Seasons.
Hotel Jackson
Hotel Terra
This debut property of the Terra Resort Group, a hotel-management company that is headed by a former Four Seasons exec, opened to much acclaim in 2008. Situated slopeside, Hotel Terra is Jackson Hole’s first eco-property and LEED-certified. Its minimally-designed interiors and cool ambiance are proof that you don’t have to sacrifice style to go green.
The 132 rooms, spread across five floors, are cozy yet modern, a far cry from the Wild West motif characterizing most places in the village. The accommodations boast the usual luxuries: spacious bathrooms, flat-screen televisions, Bose surround sound and iHome iPod docking stations, as well as a subdued color scheme of deep greens, chocolates and beiges. Reading the in-room guide you learn that, in addition, the windows are energy-efficient, keeping the heat out in the summer and in, in the winter; you’re sleeping on a custom mattress made from organic cotton; that your room is cleaned with chemical-free products; and that the coffee you sip in the morning is organic and fair trade. There’s a director of sustainability on the premises, so a lot of green thought informs even smallest details, such as the recycling bins in the closets and separate thermostats for the bath- and bedrooms.
The hotel doesn’t pretend to have the white-glove service of the neighboring Four Seasons. You bus your own breakfast at the in-house Terra Café, ordering delicious organic fare at the counter, then bringing it to one of the small tables, where you pull up a chair made of recycled seat belts. And you may store your skis only in the ski cellar, taking your boots up to your room (there are boot dryers in the rooms). But the tiny Chill Spa, on the top floor, lives up to its name, with a relaxation room designed in poppy, turquoise and blue and a rooftop hot tub offering a view of the mountain. Guests are mostly young families and stylish couples, many of whom eat breakfast dressed in ski gear (the aerial tram is right outside Hotel Terra’s back door).
Snake River Lodge & Spa
Housed in a log-cabin-style building slopeside in Teton Village, the Snake River Lodge channels the Wild West and is a value option for travelers trying to avoid Four Seasons prices. Its spacious lobby has lodge pole beams and wooden floors, large fireplaces framed with rough-cut stone and hokey touches such as stuffed mountain lions, carved wooden bears and fur-covered armchairs. The property has a lived-in feel, although travelers with a more understated aesthetic may feel assaulted by the myriad of textures, materials and mementos on display—even the elevator is lined in wood.
The lodge has 156 rooms appointed in a generic Western-style with a brown, olive and beige palette. All feature paintings of Native Americans and beds covered with floral-print quilts as well as flat-screen televisions and Wi-Fi, and half of the accommodations offer fireplaces. Families will appreciate the large selection of configurations—king-, queen- or double beds, plus sleeper couches—and the kitchenettes and washer-drier units provided in some units.
Kids as well as skiers back from a day on the slopes can take advantage of the large pool area, complete with indoor-outdoor pools, waterfalls, hot tubs and a sauna. During the winter, the property is ski-in, ski-out, and the ski valets are among the best in Jackson Hole.
Villa Rentals
Offering a high level of service and standards and the convenience of a private home, renting a villa can be a great option when staying in Jackson Hole. Indagare's preferred partner offers some of the finest homes in the area—guests will find Molton Brown products, fresh towels and sheets and an a la carte cleaning service as well as other amenities you may expect from a hotel. If you’re there ski, choose a spot closer to Teton Village; in summertime, aim for a place with more privacy and views of the peaks.
