  • The supremely comfortable décor of the eight residential-style suites
  • The ski amenities, including a gear shop, ski valet and prime location next to “Big Red” (any closer, and you’d be sleeping in the tram)
  • The local treats on the kitchen counter to welcome guests, including smoked elk jerky, baked goods from Persephone’s Bakery and a bag of Cowboy Coffee beans

Review

Located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain adjacent to Teton Village’s iconic “Big Red” aerial tram, Caldera House is the passion project of a dedicated owner, business mogul Wesley Edens, who has skied and climbed peaks in Jackson Hole for decades. The result is a spectacularly stylish hotel, a cushy members-only alpine club for residents of the Wyoming town, a revived local dining institution and a casual slope-side café that draws visitors and locals alike.

Despite the small footprint of the property, its eight suites (including two-bedroom and four-bedroom options) pack a punch. Each one is different, yet all have private balconies (some with hot tubs), state-of-the-art kitchens and sprawling common spaces with wood-burning fireplaces. Conceived by lauded L.A. firm Commune in collaboration with local studio Carney Logan Burke Architects, the spaces are impeccably designed. Unlike the traditionally Western dark and woodsy approach found in most Jackson Hole properties, Caldera House features a modern, Scandinavian-influenced style with subtle elements of the American West. Guests will find vintage Moroccan carpets alongside cozy cowhide rugs, sleek tiled bathrooms outfitted with whipstitch leather hooks and mid-century Danish wishbone chairs paired with high-end Italian furnishings. The 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom owners’ residences are particularly palatial, and each one features a unique design element influenced by its proprietor. The Taupo suite, for example, feels exceptionally rich and warm, whereas Pacana has a strikingly spare and Zen appeal, including a dramatic black limestone Japanese soaking tub. Though the comfortable suites tempt guests to simply stay put, winter visitors can take advantage of the convenient ski-in/ski-out location, access to a ski valet and the in-house gear shop, which provides rentals, fittings and equipment for sale. For après-ski recovery, there is a heated infinity plunge pool, a dry sauna, an expansive gym and one spa treatment room, though guests are encouraged to enjoy en-suite massages.

The cozy-chic restaurant, **Old Yellowstone Garage**, is a revival of a local favorite that shuttered in 2007 and was reopened by Caldera House; here, guests can enjoy Italian fare such as Roman artichoke hearts and the delicious "OYG lasagna." During the day, **Southcable Café** is a casual grab-and-go spot designed to connect visitors with the local community, attracting everyone from families to ski bums to patrolmen with its reasonably priced pizza, beer and other offerings. Hotel guests also have the option to enjoy drinks and food at the alpine club’s private **Lounge & Bar**, located on the third floor of the property. For those who’d like to dine “at home,” chefs can be brought in, groceries can be stocked prior to check-in and there is also the option of a “we make, you bake” offering prepared by the chefs of Old Yellowstone Garage.

The small but mighty team of dedicated concierges is particularly impressive. The individual who prepares your itinerary before you arrive will also pick you up at the airport, deliver your en-suite breakfast each morning, equip you with a packed lunch and bear spray before dropping you off for a hike in Teton National Park and act as a waiter should you choose to enjoy a catered dinner in your room. Caldera House’s staff is exceptionally plugged into the local scene and can organize a variety of activities, from backcountry heli-skiing in the winter to yoga paddle-boarding on a glacial lake during the summer. Caldera House is also the only hotel in town to offer custom tailored experiences with Exum Mountain Guides, the oldest guide service in the country and the only one permitted to guide within Teton National Park. In partnership with the hotel, Exum can arrange anything from a half-day climb to Cody Peak just outside the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to an overnight summit of the famed Grand Teton.

Who Should Stay

Travelers looking for the comforts and accessibility of a ski resort, but without sacrificing exclusivity, aesthetics or atmosphere. While the intimate vibe would be great for couples, the room configurations are either two-bedroom or four-bedroom suites, so they lend themselves especially well to families and groups of friends seeking extra room to spread out. Adventure lovers drawn to luxe passion projects such as the Ranch at Rock Creek or Deplar Farm will be right at home here.
