Review

Founded in 1979, Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort, Tucson was a pioneering property in the wellness retreat movement, and it continues to offer one of the most balanced health and relaxation getaways in the American Southwest.

Accommodations range from single rooms to three-bedroom casitas, making the resort a great option for solo travelers and larger groups of friends or family members alike. The wellness facilities include access to the 80,000-square-foot spa, which offers everything from classic massages and restorative facials, body scrubs and wraps to Ayurvedic body treatments and Meridian-based energy work—as well as meditation and sauna rooms; 35+ daily fitness classes in such disciplines as dance, yoga, pilates, cycling, squash, strength training and cardiovascular exercise; multiple indoor, outdoor and treatment pools; two main dining rooms, the demo kitchen and snack stations throughout the property; tennis courts; rope courses; walking/running paths; and the specialized Aesthetics Center and Life Enhancement Center (see below*). There are also certified medical professionals on staff, so it is possible to arrange certain medical procedures and treatment plans for certain illnesses on property.

Compared to other destination spas, Canyon Ranch Tucson is much more akin to an "adult summer camp" than it is a fitness, mindfulness or weight-loss bootcamp designed to effect immediate transformation. Guests can be as active or inactive as they wish during their stays, and meals (which are all included) are easily accessible and delicious, not restrictive; although the menu promotes clean, healthy eating (with a calorie count and nutritional facts next to every item), dessert is always on offer and snacks are widely available, throughout the day. The friendly staff are known for promoting a "judgment-free zone" and cultivating casual, encouraging relationships with guests—but it is also important to note that the program's lack of pressure can be mirrored by a more relaxed style of service.

The resort recently underwent an extensive renovation, primarily focused on updating the décor of the rooms, spa and fitness facilities with a polished, fresh mood that emphasizes a soothing grey-and-beige color scheme and dark wood accents.

Who Should Stay

Those looking for expert services that cultivate lasting change.

Canyon Ranch Tucson now offers two new wellness departments to supplement its classic programming:

  • The property recently opened the Canyon Ranch Aesthetics center, which can administer medical treatments such as Botox, Juvederm, micro-needling, Latisse and more. Driven by the “look good, feel good” mantra, this new department is still under-the-radar, but gaining popularity.
  • For those who may want a more structured, community-oriented experience, the Canyon Ranch Life Enhancement Center offers seven-day immersive retreats that facilitate “transformative wellness.” The program is hosted on the Tucson property, but within its own secluded area that allows participants to focus, with an exclusive gym, dining room and wellness facilities. Most weeks have 40 spots available. Contact your dedicated trip designer or inquire here to learn more.
