Review

A former coal-mining town, Crested Butte is now considered a great Colorado ski resort, but perhaps more brag-worthy is that it is home to one of the American West’s most pampering boutique hotels: Scarp Ridge Lodge. Owned and operated by Eleven Experience, a pioneering company with a smattering of properties worldwide that focus on thrilling adventures, the six-room hotel strikes the perfect balance between small-town charm and modern luxury. Located in the center of town and named after the nearby 12,000-foot-tall Scarp Ridge, the hideaway is a bucket-list destination for families, groups and couples who enjoy high-thrill excursions and five-star pampering.

Scarp Ridge Lodge, which can be rented either for exclusive use or used as a hotel with individual guest rooms, features a cozy-chic Western décor that incorporates aspects of the region into its design, like reclaimed iron from the old mills in town and elk and moose taxidermy. The six accommodations are all slightly different (five king rooms with en suite bathrooms and a kids' bunkroom, with seven bunks) but supremely comfortable, featuring a mix of fur blankets, cream furnishings and exposed wood beams. This winter, Eleven Experience will debut the Lofts at Public House, which will be three extra suites located on the main drag in Crested Butte town.

Guests will likely not spend much time in their rooms with the plethora of other public spaces on property. The roof deck features a copper hot tub; the “storytelling room” boasts a fireplace and reading nooks; the media room is defined by its oversized movie screen; and there is a saltwater pool in the basement. The hotel also offers a steam room, sauna and gym. Dining options are equally diverse, and meals are served at the communal table in the kitchen and cocktails and snacks are available at the bar.

Scarp Ridge Lodge has a team of guides who lead a variety of activities throughout the year, including exclusive-use cat-skiing on Irwin Mountain, mountain biking, rock climbing, white-water rafting, fly-fishing and more. Guests have access to 1,000 acres of nearby backcountry terrain, ensuring that adventures here are personal and private.

Who Should Stay

Families, couples and multigenerational groups looking for a five-star experience and all the fun of sleep-away camp; Scarp Ridge is also ideal for a group buyout.
