Canyonlands

• Elevation: 3,700 to 7,200 feet

The expansive Canyonlands is larger than Arches, Bryce and Zion combined. It's divided into four distinctive parts, none of which are linked by a road, so deciding which one to explore depends largely on your group's interest and fitness level. Island in the Sky is the most accessible, with lots of overlooks for photo opportunities. You'll need a four-wheel drive and a lot more time to explore Needles, Maze and Horseshoe Canyon.

For day hikers, Canyonlands doesn't offer the many options of Arches and is more difficult to access with long driving distances between sights. But serious back-country explorers rave about its unparalleled terrain, with slot canyons, challenging hiking and some of the state's best river rafting.

Who Should Go

Due to its size (massive) and terrain (mostly back country), Canyonlands is best for overnight hiking trips and serious river rafting. If you have time to drive in, there are many overlooks with expansive vistas for photos.
