St. Regis Bora Bora Review

Set on 44 acres, the St. Regis Bora Bora is a large-scale resort sitting within a lagoon of five man-made motus (islands) linked by bridges. The 89 over-water villas are all suites with thatched roofs; built almost side by side, but interiors feel spacious. Accent furniture brings bright pops of color to the rooms’ dark teak surfaces. The bathrooms were built with couples in mind, with an open layout that features a platform shower (no walls) and a heart-shaped Jacuzzi. Some of the larger suites have an outdoor deck with a private Jacuzzi or a swimming pool. All face either the inner lagoon or the ocean, with the jagged peaks of Mount Otemanu in the distance.

The St. Regis has staked its claim with couples, as evidenced by its popular onsite bridal boutique, where guests can have dresses made and fitted by a Polynesian designer. Honeymooners make up the most of the visitors, who enjoy not just the romantic services (wedding arrangements, private dinners, honeymoon amenities) but also the facilities, which cater primarily to lovebirds.

The 13,000-square-foot Miri Miri spa by Clarins sits on its own motu off to one side of the resort. It is completely open-air, has lots of couples’ treatment rooms and offers such locally inspired treatments as the Polynesian Taurumi Massage with a volcanic coffee foot scrub. Besides the main pool, there is a more private one for adults only that comes with curtained cabanas. Group or private fitness classes are also available with an on-property trainer.

While one might not expect French Polynesia to be at the top of the list for gourmet food, the St. Regis is as close as it gets with its upscale restaurant, Lagoon, featuring innovative and delicious French and Polynesian fusion fare. Besides its seafood-centric menu that features primarily local catch, this popular fine-dining restaurant features a unique setting where diners get to peer down glass floorboards to see sharks swim by as they enjoy dinner. The more casual Te Pahu serves an incredible poisson cru, tuna tartare marinated in coconut milk and a fish burger that is arguably tops on the island. For something other than seafood, Far Niente serves Italian comfort food, and Bam Boo offers Asian specialties like teppanyaki and sushi. Every evening there is musical entertainment at the resort – a big hit with couples looking for more than just a quiet holiday.

Families are also welcome, and there is a kids’ club, but they may feel out of place given the majority of couples who stay here.

Who Should Stay

Couples who value a variety of dining and entertainment options on property and are happy mingling with other couples.
