While the Western world often overlooks the roles of Australia and New Zealand in the great wars of the 20th century, their efforts were seen as defining moments in the national identity of both countries. ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) is held in the highest esteem, and the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne commemorates ANZAC soldiers throughout history. Set in a giant, temple-like building in a beautiful park south of the Yarra River, the monument is a stoic reminder of the sacrifices made by a country that, at the time, had very little to sacrifice at all. April 25th is ANZAC Day in Australia, and the occasion is marked by flyovers and ceremonies.
