has ten major wine-growing regions. Many of the wineries are well-known to U.S. consumers, but wonderful boutique producers exist as well. Here are some of the best in four major regions.

Marlborough, South Island

Oenophiles grumble that there is no place really nice to stay in Marlborough, one of New Zealand’s finest wine regions. Once you’re in the Wairau valley, surrounded by Mount Richmond Forest Park and glorious rolling hills, you quickly forgive this lack.

Gibbston, South Island

The Central Otago region surrounding Queenstown contains six small appellations specializing in Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay in a stunning setting, at the foot of the Southern Alps.

Hawke’s Bay, North Island

New Zealand’s oldest and second-largest wine-producing region, centered on the city of Napier on the North Island’s east coast, produces mostly big reds like Bordeaux blends and quality Syrahs.

Martinborough, North Island

Vintners have been cultivating in Martinborough since the late 1970s, but the region has only recently emerged from the shadow of New Zealand’s more famous wine-making areas, with its Pinot Noirs leading the way.
