Review

On a typical day at Vomo Island, the center of activity is the swimming pool, located just steps from the beach, where most children flock. By sundown, the action moves to the adults-only Rocks Bar for champagne flutes, lounging mattresses and sublime pink sunsets, where the family resort feels like a hip lounge reminiscent of Sydney or New York. This dual nature exemplifies one of Vomo’s primary draws: it caters to parents and children alike.

Vomo offers 28 one-bedroom villas, each of which can sleep two adults and up to two children, as well as four well-appointed residences that include dedicated butler service. (Two of these residences were recently unveiled after a seven-month closure following Cyclone Winston in 2016, during which time the property underwent a $10 million refurbishment.) An Indagare favorite is the new three-bedroom BeacHouse, with smart contemporary interiors and a stunning infinity pool facing the sea. Those seeking a more traditional aesthetic might prefer the three-bedroom Royal, featuring dark wood furnishings, a Fijian thatched roof and a location at the end of the beach near a dramatic volcanic rock formation. Two beachfront, four-bedroom residences are also available, including The Palms—a sleek and opulent space that is ideal for groups of friends or families with teenagers. Amenities in all rooms include L’Occitane toiletries, complimentary same-day laundry service, WiFi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Designed to accommodate families, the resort includes a complimentary Kids Village (where children 3 years and under incur a nominal fee for the supervision of a dedicated nanny). The natural warmth so intrinsic to Fijian culture shines through at this tricked-out kids’ club, where many of the staff have worked for 15 years. The facility, which is accessed via a fun suspension bridge, includes an outdoor jungle gym and an array of high-quality toys within the comforts of the air-conditioned playroom. Activities range from traditional weaving workshops to diving classes in the pool designed specifically for 8- to 12-year-olds.

The resort provides paddle-boards, kayaks and Hobie Cat sailboats for guests to explore the island’s two calm beaches, which are protected by an outdoor reef. The snorkeling is superb, and guests should take advantage of the daily guided snorkel safari. Paid activities include courses at the PADI Dive Center and handline fishing. On land, there is a tennis court, a short but strenuous hike to the top of the island, a 9-hole pitch and putt golf course and a well-equipped fitness center, while Vomo’s tiny second island, Vomo Lailai, is an ideal castaway picnic spot. Adults can visit the tranquil Kui spa, manned by an expert team of Balinese and Thai therapists. The property also boasts the lovely Reef Restaurant overlooking the swimming pool and ocean, where families can enjoy dinner together under the balmy night sky while a live band plays acoustic Fijian tunes.

Who Should Stay

Vomo Island Resort is well-suited for families. It is authentically Fijian in spirit, and low-key travelers will appreciate its sense of place and informal, easygoing environment. Watersport enthusiasts will also appreciate the range of activities available.
