Indagare’s Most-Booked Hotels in 2022

As 2022 comes to a close, Indagare's most-booked properties of the year reflect what many of us have desired for several years—a grandiose return to our favorite destinations (our homes-away-from-home, if you will). International travel is back, and Indagare members tended towards iconic and grande dame properties, making up for lost time.

As predicted, we saw a surge in European bookings this year, with France, England and Italy leading the charge. Travelers returned in droves to the big cities like Paris, London, New York and Rome, but also explored beachside destinations, like Sicily and Florida, and farther-flung retreats in Iceland and Morocco.

33. The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, New York City

One of the last remaining historic hotels in the city, The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel on East 76th Street and Madison Avenue transports guests to the New York of old with its discreet elegance and beloved Art Deco Bemelmans Bar.

32. Heckfield Place, Hampshire

The 18th-century estate-turned-countryside-hotel Heckfield Place is nothing short of majestic—400 acres of gardens and woodlands, resident Saddleback pigs, farm-to-table cuisine and Scandinavian-inspired spaces, where you can sit by a warm fire, help to create a relaxing homey retreat.

26. Crosby Street Hotel, New York City

A wonderfully colorful Manhattan respite on a quiet SoHo street, Firmdale's Crosby Street Hotel has whimsical and fantastical interiors (that still maintain an ultra-luxe feel) and is home to the Crosby Bar, which has become one of New York City's hot spots, drawing in crowds with al fresco cocktails and all-day dining.

The bar and pool area is a frequent setting for glamorous parties, where guests can dance around the metallic painted columns beneath twinkling ceiling lights before taking a dip.

24. Amangiri, Utah

Blending effortlessly with its sand-hued surroundings, minimalist Amangiri beckons those who crave mornings in the great outdoors followed by afternoons relaxing at the spa or pool—and at Amangiri, a spectacular boulder sits front and center with the U-shaped pool hugging the edges.

23. The Balmoral, A Rocco Forte Hotel, Edinburgh

Historic landmark The Balmoral is the grande dame of Edinburgh—a palatial structure with gorgeous vistas of Edinburgh Castle set in an ideal location for exploring both Old Town and New Town.

22. Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina

Travelers to Italy are catching on to Sicily's charms, and the Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel has welcomed them with beautiful archways and Baroque detailing, warm and personable service and sweeping views of Taormina (plus easy access to Europe’s oldest volcano, Mount Etna). Indagare loves the al fresco dining at Michelin-starred Ristorante Otto Geleng, celebrating local ingredients and dishes like baby eggplants and freshly grilled fish.

21. Hotel de la Ville, A Rocco Forte Hotel, Rome

At the top of the lively Spanish Steps in a restored 18th-century palazzo sits Hotel de la Ville, A Rocco Forte Hotel, offering sophisticated design with classical influences (think obelisks, Roman-style busts and bold fabrics and rugs by local designers) and a quiet interior courtyard to retire to after a day in the Eternal City. The on-property gem is the Cielo rooftop, with spectacular views of St. Peter's Basilica.

The Narnia-like wonderland on Iceland’s Troll Peninsula is home to Deplar Farm, an uber-luxe adventure hotel serving up once-in-a-lifetime experiences: world-class wilderness guides, summit-to-sea heli-skiing and countless other activities, not to mention a spectacular indoor-outdoor pool, where guests might see the Northern Lights.

19. The Berkeley, London

The lively sister property to both The Connaught and Claridge's, The Berkeley draws in a young, fashionable crowd with its contemporary, Japanese Minimalist and Art Deco touches. Nestled in the foothills of Morocco's Atlas Mountains, dotted with Berber villages and breathtaking mountain peaks, Kasbah Tamadot is a chic private escape blending luxe accommodations and an appreciation for Moroccan and Bedouin style. An Indagare favorite boutique property, the intimacy and thoughtful design (sourced from local Parisian flea markets) at J.K. Place Paris evokes a chic, residential feel on the Left Bank.

14. Capri Tiberio Palace

and design-oriented travelers flock to the colorful and creative Capri Tiberio Palace, the unconventional brainchild of Milanese designer Giampiero Panepinto. Local authenticity shines through with pops of Capri's famous cerulean blues, the vegetable garden, where the chef holds private cooking classes and breathtaking views of the island from the terraces and elegant archways.

13. Villa d'Este, Lake Como

Lakefront legend Villa d'Este is beloved by Italians and foreigners alike for its old-world glamour—lavishly decorated rooms with silk-brocade drapes and regal oil paintings, glamorous dinners accompanied by live music and 25 acres of magnificent gardens and grounds, not to mention the hotel's heated floating pool and hot tub where guests (unsurprisingly) spend the majority of their time.

12. Rosa Alpina, Dolomites

Three generations of the Pizzinini family have owned and run Rosa Alpina, a wonderful hideaway in the Italian Dolomites complete with warm hospitality and tasteful design. Guests return year after year for a dose of the property's cozy-chic décor, delicious restaurants (including the Michelin-starred Restaurant St. Hubertus) and access to the great outdoors. (Rosa Alpina recently incorporated into the Aman brand.)

11. The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice

Murano glass and Rubelli fabrics meet contemporary amenities at the iconic Gritti Palace, which was the home of the famous Pisano and Gritti families for hundreds of years before it was transformed into a luxury hotel. With its Grand Canal location best enjoyed from the terraces, it remains one of Venice's reigning properties.

10. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Tuscany

With truffle-hunting and wine tasting in the rolling hillsides of the Montalcino region, Massimo Ferragamo's 5,000-acre estate, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is a dream come true for foodies and oenophiles. A destination in and of itself, the historic borgo has a transportive sense-of-place— Rosewood amenities and comforts combine with the handiwork of Florentine craftsmen to create a magical Tuscan retreat.

Originally a famous social club and stomping ground for big names like Elizabeth Taylor and Winston Churchill, the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club has transformed into a delightful blend of luxury, style and elegance, while maintaining a bit of The Surf Club's 1930s spirit.

6. Claridge's, London

The great beauty of the Maybourne Hotel Group, Claridge's is one of London's most prestigious hotels; travelers seeking top-notch service and the ultimate see-and-be-seen hot spot in Mayfair are often found in the Art Deco lobby or bumping elbows at afternoon tea.

5. La Réserve Paris Hotel and Spa

Occupying a Haussmann mansion that was originally built by Napoleon III, La Réserve successfully married glamorous interiors with an intimate boutique feel; its bold colors, silk-lined walls and gold accents combine effortlessly with its cozy common spaces and reading nooks to create a quintessentially Parisian getaway.

4. Hotel de Russie, A Rocco Forte Hotel, Rome

Aperitivo for two? Hotel de Russie, A Rocco Forte Hotel, is Rome's most iconic (but discreet) celebrity watering hole. The draws: the tucked away location off the Piazza de Popolo, aperitivo at the glamorous Le Jardin de Russie restaurant (overlooking the property's secret garden) and the spacious rooms with large marble bathrooms and pastel-hued walls.

One of the top palace properties in Paris, it is Le Bristol sophisticated charm that keeps guests returning year after year—as does its 13,000-square-feet garden (one of the largest hotel gardens in Paris), unique indoor pool and three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Epicure.

2. The Connaught Hotel, London

Setting the standard for luxury hotels around the world, The Connaught (the eldest of the Maybourne Hotel Group) attracts longtime loyalists with its elegance, high-touch service and convenient Mayfair location—meanwhile, the newer, trendier crowd can’t get enough of the property’s new Red Room, a swanky hideaway behind the hotel's Champagne Room, showcasing creative works from female visionaries.

1. Ritz Paris

Indagare's most-booked hotel of 2022 was none other than the grande dame of Paris itself, Ritz Paris. Travelers seeking Parisian luxury and glamour were eager to get back to the home-away-from-home of royals, fashion icons and literary stars—and who can blame them? The property's 2016 renovation by designer Thierry Despont revealed a wonderful balance between the legendary old and the refreshing new; rooms and suites are more spacious, maximize natural light and use soft pastel color palettes to give an airy touch, while the beloved Empire period furniture, upholsteries and walls decorated with an impressive collection of original oil paintings remain the same. Its famous high-touch service (as graceful and elegant as the setting) is apparent immediately upon arrival and is an integral part of the Ritz experience—as is the iconic oak-paneled Hemingway Bar, once frequented by Ernest Hemingway (its namesake) and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
