Travel Photo Albums and Memento: Memorializing Trips

Technology has made one of my favorite aspects of travel—memorializing the adventures—even better, and since I often create holiday gifts like travel photo albums for friends and family, I thought I'd share some of my favorite resources for capturing and sharing the best moments of travel.

Capturing Moments

This spring, when my niece got engaged in Budapest, the Indagare travel specialist who worked with her fiancé helped him plan the perfect day and location but also arranged for a local photographer to capture the momentous event--unobtrusively. Flytographer is a service that allows travelers to book photographers for on-location photo shoots in hundreds of destinations worldwide, from Paris to Cape Town. We had them photograph parts of our Rome Insider Trip last fall, and we've arranged the sessions for families and friends celebrating special events as well as for teens or couples who want portraits set against some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. The souvenirs can be framed, made into holiday cards or used to make photo albums. Contact Indagare to book one of our favorite photographers for a session.

Travel Photo Albums

Once a process that required glue sticks and hours now takes nothing more than WiFi and a few minutes. We create travel photo albums for each of our Indagare Journeys and have amassed a collection in my office from trips to Rwanda, Rome, India and many other destinations. Artifact Uprising is one of my favorite printers because their books are beautifully made from 100% recycled paper and can be bound with lovely fabric covers. Blurb is another great service for creating albums, which can come in a variety of sizes and with different cover designs and layouts.

Photo Art

Throughout the Indagare offices we have blown-up, printed photos from our staff’s travels. These not only capture moments from beloved trips, but also serve as inspiration for the adventures we plan for our members. You can order them with your own photos through Canvaspop, a service that produces high-quality canvas prints by hand. Companies like Social Print Studio allow you to print photos and make them into postcards, calendars, magnets, stickers, posters and more. Framebridge is an excellent resource for framing works—whether they’re your own photos (you can upload JPEGs for them to print and frame) or artworks or posters you pick up on your journeys.

Travel Videos

Video is an amazing tool for preserving the memory of past travels in real-time, as it captures the movements of a crowded piazza or the sounds of a bustling souk like few other mediums can. Recently, an Indagare member recommended working with a talented videographer and editor who can assist our members with compiling your photos, videos and Go-Pro clips from any trip. Then, he will produce short films of your journeys—complete with a fun trailer—that are easy to store and share with friends, and can be revisited whenever you desire.  Contact Indagare to be connected with a travel video editor.

Honoring Old Memories

Some of my most beloved possessions are photos from family travels with my grandmother and extended family, but my films on reel-to-reel or VHSs had been unwatchable on my current devices until I discovered Legacy Box. The service digitizes all formats, so you send your films, videos and photos, and get back the originals plus digitized versions on a thumb drive or DVD, which can be reprinted and shared and—most importantly—kept safe for perpetuity.
