Miami

The South Florida city offers winter travelers a welcome blast of heat and some of the most fabulous hotels in the Americas. On February 2nd, it’s hosting the Super Bowl, drawing more than 65,000 football fans to see which team will be champion of the NFL’s 100th season (and a halftime show featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira). Two weeks after the Super Bowl, the annual South Beach Wine & Food Festival sees top chefs converge on the sands of Miami Beach, from February 19-23.

Deer Valley

Deep powder, a wide range of ski runs and chic lodges make Deer Valley—a gorgeous resort within Park City—one of America’s best places to ski. The crowds show up each January for Sundance Film Festival, so February is a better option if you’re looking for mountain time without the paparazzi and the crowds at Park City restaurants.

Los Cabos

On the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, Los Cabos is home to multiple ultra-luxurious properties, a clutch of farm-to-table hotspots and, in the winter, epic whale watching. In February, the main attraction will be newborn humpbacks, who’ll be learning to master the waters just offshore before starting their long migration north.

Venice

February might actually be the best time of year to visit Venice, with half the crowds and a slew of cultural events—including the legendary Carnival festivities—plus a lower risk of flooding than November and December. Spanning February 8-25, 2020, Carnival comprises masquerade balls, boat parades on the canals and classical concerts (plus frittelle, traditional Venetian fried-dough only served before Lent). Another bonus: winter is opera season at La Felice, one of the world’s greatest opera houses. This year, see Donizetti's two-act comedy L'Elisir d'Amore in the gilded theater.

Swiss Alps

Swiss cities host their own take on carnival—Fasnacht, in the German-speaking Zurich, Basel and Lucerne, Rabadan in the Ticino—throughout the month. This is also peak ski season, when Europe’s well-to-do congregate in St. Moritz and Zermatt for exciting days on the slopes and a refined après-ski scene.

Cambodia

December and January are peak tourist season in Cambodia, thanks to slightly cooler weather without much risk of rain. Savvy travelers will want to visit in February, though. Why? It’s still dry season and the heat is manageable, but crowds at sites like Angkor Wat are noticeably thinner compared to previous months.

Mexico City

February sees mild temperatures (hovering in the 70s) and negligible rain in Mexico City, making it an ideal escape for a long weekend or more. Globally recognized restaurants like Pujol, Contramar and Rosetta—not to mention tacos at every corner—also make the capital a food-lover’s mecca, while design aficionados will appreciate the plethora of art museums and stylish shopping.
