Indagare Is Going Carbon-Neutral!

Indagare is excited to announce that we are going carbon-neutral! To reach our goal of net-zero emissions, we’re partnering with Sustainable Travel International for our carbon offsetting programs. Read below for more information surrounding our offsetting process.

What are Indagare’s emission sources?

At Indagare, our emission sources include a small carbon footprint from staff operations, as well as a larger carbon footprint from activities of our members.

How does Indagare track its carbon footprint?

We estimate carbon emissions from any given trip, tracking the carbon footprint of international and domestic flights, vehicle transfers, hotel stays, yacht charters and rentals, helicopter tours and meals. We have calculated these amounts using trusted, peer-reviewed sources including the EPA, the UK Department of the Environment and studies from institutions such as Cornell and Johns Hopkins universities.

What does carbon offsetting mean, and what is Indagare doing?

Carbon offsetting applies to actions taken to compensate for emissions of carbon dioxide as the result of human activity. Based on our tracked carbon emissions, Indagare purchases carbon offsets. These offsetting costs help fund certified projects that protect and restore forests, produce clean energy and increase energy efficiency. Together, these programs reduce greenhouse gas emissions by removing existing emissions from the atmosphere and preventing new emissions.

What projects is Indagare supporting?

Indagare has partnered with Sustainable Travel International to provide funding for important projects around the world. Examples include reforestation in the Amazon and community development in Asia, particularly surrounding efficient cookware. We base our funding amount for these programs on the amount of carbon emissions we aim to offset.

Why did you partner with STI?

We chose to work with STI due to the organization’s rigorous quality assurance processes. Each project is independently certified by at least one of six prestigious institutions (WWF’s Gold StandardVerified Carbon StandardClimate, Community and Biodiversity StandardsPlan VivoClimate Action Reserve; or the American Carbon Registry). Furthermore, the assessment is ongoing, ensuring that a project continues to provide all the benefits it said it would. Read more about verification criteria, and how Indagare Travel and Sustainable Travel International are ensuring our carbon projects are legitimate at sustainabletravel.org.

Is Indagare carbon-neutral now?

Indagare is not yet a carbon-neutral company. We anticipate that we will be mostly carbon-neutral by the end of 2022, and fully carbon-neutral by the end of 2023.
