Episode 7 Travel Legends: the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express & the Return of Train Travel

Melissa travels to Venice to discuss the return of luxury train travel with Pascal Deyrolle, General Manager of Belmond’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. When you board the legendary train, you are immediately transported back in time to the golden age of travel… an era it seems we are returning to today. To ride the train is to embark on a 138-year-old journey, an experience shared with some of history’s most glamorous characters, such as Tolstoy and Trotsky, Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel. The train is made up of meticulously restored and upgraded cars from the 1920s and 1930s, allowing today’s passengers to experience 19th-century opulence and romance while enjoying modern-day amenities. Pascal and Melissa will speak about life on the train – from dining to what to wear – and the routes the train takes across Europe, including the iconic six-night journey from Paris to Istanbul that is made only once per year. The two will also discuss the importance in preserving artisanship, the value in slowing down and disconnecting to enjoy the journey. Plus, Pascal shares his insider tips for planning your trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express—including how to get the best views on the train for that magical photo opp—and which famous guest blew him away.

Don’t miss: Packing light is essential for train travel (all travel, really!), so this week on travel hacks, Melissa shares the carry-on packing strategies she swears by.
