“Al masmak” means a high, strong and thick building—a fitting name for this fort made of clay and mud brick at the heart of Riyadh’s Old Quarter. In 1902, King Abdulaziz captured the fortress and took control of Riyadh, unifying the kingdoms and provinces that make up the nation of Saudi Arabia today. In 1995, the fortress was converted into a museum where visitors can learn about Saudi’s unification.
