The story of the British royal family’s love affair with the Scottish Highlands began in 1852, when Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle for Queen Victoria. The castle, located near the village of Braemar, has been a beloved home of British royals ever since. Because it is a frequently visited and active personal home of the royal family, public access is limited and changes yearly. The opening of Balmoral to the public typically starts on April 1st and runs until mid-August. Visitors are only granted entry to the gardens and the castle ballroom, and there is a short audio tour to guide the experience. The castle is stunning, but some might find a visit here not worthwhile because of the restricted interior access.
