The 16th-century monastery Cartoixa d’Escaladei, at the base of the daunting cliffs of Montsant Natural Park, is currently undergoing restorations but is still available for visits.
Travelers can wander the halls, rooms and pathways of the monks, and also learn the purpose of each room and how monastic life unfolded within the walls of the monastery, which were closed to the public. Perhaps the most impressive feature is the archway topped with the Virgin Mary by the the primary entrance into the monastery, which is lined with tall trees. Plan to spend around 45 minutes here.
