For Dian Fossey fans and adventurous travelers seeking a guaranteed challenge, a trek to see Fossey’s grave and campsite is available in Volcanoes National Park. Dian Fossey lived at a campsite between two volcanoes, Mt. Bisoke and Mt. Karisimbi, and her site was called Karisoke. This is a tough hike with a steeper incline and ample mud, and it takes approximately seven hours round-trip depending on the fitness level in the group. Travelers should arrive at Park Headquarters at 7:00 a.m. and will be back at their lodge by around 3:00 p.m..
Know Before You Go: This hike is available only to those 15 years and older, and costs around $75 per person. Like other activities in the park, purchasing permits ahead of time is recommended, though they are not as scarce as gorilla permits.
