A wish list experience, gorilla trekking is the primary draw for travelers in Rwanda. The trek involves hiking through the agricultural lands to the park boundary, before crossing into the mountainous forest to find a gorilla family (there are around twelve in Rwanda). Travelers will have one hour to spend with the family. Guides and particular gorilla families cannot be requested in advance.

Logistics: The trek begins at Volcanoes National Park Headquarters around 8:30 a.m. (although travelers should arrive at 7 a.m.), and by 2:00 p.m., most groups will be back at their lodge. Groups consist of eight travelers, a park guide, ranger and porters. Travelers have the option to privatize and buy out a group. For those who prefer a shorter or milder hike, we recommend contacting your Indagare trip designer.

Know Before You Go: Gorilla trekking permits are limited and must be requested in advance. Gorilla Trekking is only available to those 15 years and older, and the cost is around $1,500 per person per trek.
