Hit the Markets

Off The Beaten Path

Many of Australia’s best-known designers, like star duo Sass & Bide, got a start selling their wares at the local weekend markets, and these ad hoc retail institutions are still worth scouring for both up-and-coming labels and vintage pieces. Hit up Glebe Markets (10-4 every Saturday), in the city’s inner west, for artsy finds from vintage vinyl to quirky accessories and original fashion labels. Paddington Markets, also held on Saturdays, offer hand-made jewelry and a host of rising star fashion labels, like the feminine, Japanese-inspired designs from Newtown-based Kisu. Bondi Markets, meanwhile (held every Sunday on Campbell Parade at the Bondi Beach Public School) are the most famous of all, perhaps partly because of their divine location by the beach. But they’ve also acted as the launchpad for now-famous brands like Ksubi and Lover, so this is the place to discover the next generation of Aussie fashion talent.
