There are more than 1,200 favelas in the city of Rio housing twenty percent of the population. Brazilians would never visit a favela, or slum, but if you want to understand the city, it is worth making a visit. Our tour goes to the Pereira da Silva favela to visit a unique art installation and NGO: the Morrinho Project. The Morrinho Project is based on a 320m2 model of a favela cityscape. The model, much like the favelas themselves, is made out of bricks, remains and recycled material. A fourteen-year-old boy living in this favela started the project in 1997 and he and the site became famous when he was asked to recreate a version at to represent Brazil at the Venice Art Biennale in 2007. Today the original project also functions as a community project, offering a safe refuge for local children to play and express themselves and their reality in a creative manner.
