Matosinhos
Take a day trip up north to the beautiful coastal town of Matosinhos, which fronts a wide crescent of gold sand and the Atlantic Ocean. On the way up to Matosinhos, stop at the Forte de Sao Francisco Xavier (Praça de Gonçalves Zarco, (351) 22-618-1067) a 15th century fortification with incredible views of the sea. Constructed as true fortress, the fort has a drawbridge and watchtowers that will delight children, as well as a small exhibit of weapons. After the exhibit, drive up to the Restaurante Casa de Cha da Boa Nova (Rua da Boa Nova; (351) 22-994-0066). In this sophisticated and modern space that boasts floor to ceiling windows, the excellent restaurant serves a multi-course prix-fixe lunch overlooking the waves crashing below. Finally, to cool off, drive back down to Matosinhos for a swim at the oceanfront pools at Piscinas das Mares (Av. Liberdade; (351) 22-995-2610) Built right into the rocks, the two saltwater pools (one for adults, one for kids) are set next to the sea.
