Perhaps the most interesting and well-developed of the smaller castles, Montpoupon is also one of the most picturesque, located in a forest at the confluence of four valleys where hunting parties have gathered for centuries. Even the hunting-averse will find themselves captivated by the rooms devoted to the history and art of French hunting traditions (including a vast collection of Hermès saddles and silk scarves). Inside the impeccably restored and staged castle, sensors activate sound and holograms begin as visitors pass through, making it feel as if the castle’s former residents are still there. The private attic rooms offer a glimpse into the pre-World War I lifestyle of the manor’s residents. Make sure to visit the spectacular tower, with its century-old timber beams and guard windows overlooking miles of rolling forest.
