Mount Nebo, Jordan
Located 15 minutes by car from the city of Madaba, Mount Nebo is a sacred mountain in Jordan, believed to be the spot where Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. From the top of the mountain on a clear day, you can see the Dead Sea, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. The remains of a small monastery built by Egyptian monks still stands atop the mountain as well, and its church containing a collection of Byzantine mosaics was reconstructed in the fifth century. After visiting Mount Nebo, visitors will typically head to lunch in Madaba—an ancient city known for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics—at Haret Jdoudna. Following lunch, walk to the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George just down the road where you can view a famous 6th Century mosaic map of the Holy Land.
