Nyamata, Rwanda, Rwanda
Begin the day tour approximately one hour south of Kigali with a harrowing visit to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, based around a former church. The memorial commemorates the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, and 50,000 people are buried here in mass graves. The church still has the belongings of many Tutsi who sought refuge here but were massacred by the thousands.
Following a visit to the memorial, Indagare can arrange for you to hear testimony from a survivor—a difficult but profound experience. This visit is best done in an itinerary following the Kigali Genocide Memorial which provides the necessary contect. After the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, interested travelers can tour the Myange Health Center, a women’s cooperative where you can see the tailors and weavers at work. All proceeds from purchases here directly support the women in the Myange community, one of the poorest areas in Rwanda. Follow this tour up with a visit to a traditional farm in Myange and learn about farming in Rwanda today.
