Rossio Square

Rossio Square, Lisbon, Portugal

Also known as Praça Dom Pedro IV, Rossio has been a main square in Lisbon since the Middle Ages. Surrounded by quaint cafes, it is one of the city’s buzziest plazas, with two baroque fountains marking either side and cobblestones arrayed like waves (paying homage to the city’s seaside location). The centerpiece of the square is an 88-foot column with a statue of Peter IV (Dom Pedro IV), Portugal’s king in the 1800s and the first emperor of Brazil. At the head of the square is the neoclassical National Theater and just around the corner, travelers will find the awe-inspiring Igreja São Domingos.
