The SCAD Museum of Art is located in an 1853 building that is today the oldest surviving railroad depot in country. In 2011, Christian Sottile, a SCAD alumnus and now dean of its School of Building Arts transformed the structure into an award-winning, modern museum. Savannah’s notable contemporary art museum contains some special collections, such as the rare-print and -book holdings of the late Earle W. Newton, which include antique maps, editions of Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain and William Shakespeare and prints by Rembrandt, Goya and Renoir. The more than 4,5000 objects and paintings rotate.
