Most people know the name Walter Annenberg—US diplomat to the UK, magazine publisher, keen philanthropist. But if you’re in California, that name is ingrained in your mind far deeper. The Annenberg family’s name is plastered all over the state, having donated to just about every cause they could find. And a man like that makes friends.

Sunnylands is Walter Annenberg’s grand estate, and because of his giant network, it has played hosted everybody from the Queen of England to the President of China. Sometimes known as the Camp David of the West, the retreat is also used by US presidents visiting the west coast. The giant property is rich with history, and the architecture is befitting of the history it contains—giant gardens, beautiful fountains, golf courses, lakes and houses befitting of the style of the region.

Visiting the area is a treat for anybody with a passing interest in history, or even just an appreciation for a beautiful space. But if you do want to go, plan ahead—spaces are limited, and passes can sell out months in advance.
