Montenegro

Montenegro, which means black mountains, is a tiny country (only 13,800 square kilometers with roughly 644,000 inhabitants) that is often visited in conjunction with a trip to neighboring Croatia. One of the most beautiful coastal areas in the world, its fjord-like harbors are now teeming with action and world-class resorts.

    3 Days: Essential Montenegro

For centuries, Montenegro’s dramatic beauty has been hailed by foreign travelers from Italian painters to English poets. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1: Kotor & Boka Bay

Make your way to picturesque Kotor, a medieval walled town and UNESCO World Heritage Site that welcomes far fewer tourists than nearby Dubrovnik. Start with a trekking tour along the walls of the old town, or head straight to noteworthy sites like the 12th-century cathedral of St. Tryphon and the Maritime Museum. Savor a fresh seafood meal before driving north to the beautiful seaside town of Perast and visiting the lovely island of Our Lady of the Rock.

    • Day 2: Montenegrin Mountains

The road to the village of Njegusi has lots of switchbacks but stunning views of Boka Bay. Once there, the less energetic can sample famous smoked ham and cheese. Active travelers can start here on a bike ride: first uphill, then down from Njegusi to Cetinje, the old royal capital. After lunch, visit King Nikolas’ palace in Cetinje.

    • Day 3: On the Water

Charter a private boat for a day trip along the emerald green coast, where you can discover the wonders of Montenegro’s crystal clear waters and uninhabited surrounding islands and relax on secluded beaches only accessible by boat.

Montenegro is a jewel of the Adriatic with ancient towns like Kotor and distinctive resorts like the Aman Sveti Stefan. But it is the dramatic mountains that rise up from the crystalline coves that are most memorable.
