Set on a stretch of white sand and patrolled by squads of brown lemurs and sifakas, Anjajavy feels like a high-end safari lodge mixed with a South Pacific beach resort.

Indagare Loves

  • The enriching community experiences where guests can learn about the lives of both past and present Malagasy
  • The sunset tea, frequented by both guests and lemurs
  • The soft-safari schedule, allowing for short activities with plenty of time for relaxing in the beachside hammocks

Review

Set directly on the beach in the midst of a private nature reserve, Anjajavy is the most well-rounded property in Madagascar, offering something for everyone, including a wonderful beach, access to a vibrant local community, important conservation projects, adventure activities and more. All of this comes without sacrificing luxury, and nearly all 24 villas have direct ocean views and access.

To get to Anjajavy, guests will take a charter flight to the nature reserve and then drive a safari car to the lodge. These safari cars also transport guests to most activities in the area, such as searching the forests for the nocturnal aye-aye, visiting a tortoise reintegration program or doing community outreach at some of the local villages. (Travelers should note that the roads here, like all roads in Madagascar, are roughly maintained, and transits can take up to 45 minutes to travel fewer than six miles.)

While activities in Anjajavy are a key part of the experience, you don’t need to leave the grounds to feel like you’ve seen the real Madagascar. The well-manicured lawns are often a gathering place for dozens of lemurs, from the squirrel-like brown lemur to the dancing sifaka, which hops along the ground sideways. Guests also enjoy sunset tea in the “Oasis,” a garden of huge local flora that sits behind the majority of the beachfront villas and is a meeting ground for many local creatures.

Who Should Stay

Anjajavy is a must-visit for any Madagascar itinerary, offering the perfect ratio of cost effectiveness, natural activities, luxury and distinct Malagasy charm to both families and couples alike.
