Review
Nestled in a calm bend of the mighty Zambezi River, Tongabezi is a sanctuary that is built for privacy and relaxation. With six houses and five cottages (each of which comes with a dedicated butler), the property is a maze of gardens and pathways that link the main lodge to the rooms. Each of the suites comes with an expansive deck, ideal for enjoying a sundowner gin and tonic while watching the ever-present hippos floating in the river.
The accommodations are unique in design and size but similar in their spectacular views. Arguably the most unique of the houses is the Treehouse; built against the basalt rock bed, it has an open front that looks directly out over the water. The space is furnished with Anatolian carpets, a claw-footed bathtub fitted with a gilded book holder and West African artwork, all of which are accented by the massive tree trunks that artfully wind their way through the room.
At the furthest edge of the property is Dog House, which sleeps up to four people and it is ideal for families or a group of friends. The three bedrooms and their expansive decks are connected by high walkways that lead to a central private lounge, dining area and bar, as well as a plunge pool overlooking the river.
Tongabezi offers an incredible variety of activities including game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, canoeing down the Zambezi, fishing and visits to Victoria Falls. A can’t-miss is the sunset cruise, which allows guests to see wildlife on the shores of Zambia and Zimbabwe and stop at a sandbar in between the two countries to enjoy a cocktail. For those who prefer to spend their days at leisure, there is a well-equipped gym, outdoor swimming pool and bar and the “Look Out”—an open-sided deck with a thatched roof that is a great spot for a quiet afternoon and evening watching the sunset.
