The Strand Review
The only other high-end option in Yangon, besides Governor’s Residence, the historic Strand hotel is located in the downtown area, facing the Yangon river (across a busy thoroughfare). Part of the Leading Hotels of the World Group, the Strand is best for those who prefer a grand, luxurious room product and want to be based in the downtown Yangon area. The location lends itself to walking tours of the neighborhood (acclaimed Monsoon restaurant, newcomer Sofaer & Co and Gekko and and River Gallery are all nearby). The 31 accommodations (all of which are suites) are generously sized, with high ceilings, dark woods, white linens, subtle pops of color and Asian art, antiques, silks and rugs. The Strand’s lobby, which rises into a four-story atrium and conjures scenes from Somerset Maugham’s books, is normally buzzing with activity. Even if you are not staying here, come for afternoon tea in The Strand Café or a drink at the hotel’s famous Strand Bar. There's an intimate spa and a swimming pool.
