Bask in the sun and glittering water before navigating towards Koh Mak where you can learn about the island’s strategic value and spend time feeding bananas to the native monkeys. Stop for lunch at one of the many eco-resorts, like The Outrigger (www.outriggerthailand.com), which sit on wide stretches of white-sand beach. Khao Sok National Park

Head north of Phuket to this rainforest thought to be older than the Amazon. In the valleys between the park’s jagged limestone mountains, listen for calls of the park’s animal life including long-tailed macaque monkeys, Malay sun bears and wild elephants. Paddle in a wide-bodied canoe keeping an eye out for monitor lizards and hornbills. Other popular activities at the park include swimming in Cheow Lan Lake, jungle river tubing and white-water rafting.

Phang Nga Bay

A first-time must for any visitor to Phuket is exploring the sea caves, or hongs, of Phang Nga Bay. Depart from the Phuket’s Royal Marinain the late afternoon after the tourist crowds have gone and motor out to some of the most dramatic islands in the Andaman Sea on a traditional Thai fishing boat. With an expert guide, spend the later part of the afternoon exploring the caves, taking the time to swim, snorkel and discover as you go. Enjoy a spicy (as is customary of the southern provinces) and authentically Thai dinner onboard while the blazing sun sets behind the limestone cliff islands of this jungle-like national park. After dinner, just before the sun has disappeared into the sea, head back into a sea cave at James Bond island (colloquially named as such for being the set of a James Bond film) where you will present the Kratong, or offering, to the God of the Sea. While in the sea caves, be sure not to miss the phosphorescence, which scintillate in the water at night. Temple at Tiger Cave Temple , Krabi Province, Thailand - Courtesy K.Allerna

Tiger Cave Temple

Set in a scenic forest, Tiger Cave Temple is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Krabi Province. The temple was founded in 1975 by Abbot Luang Por Chamnean Srilasatheto who climbed the mountain in search of a cave he could use to meditate. According to legend, a tiger entered the cave but did not harm him. A strenuous 1,237-step climb to the shrine atop the mountain is rewarded with panoramic views of Krabi. While there are no longer any tigers in this forest, there are monkeys, so be sure to keep any snacks zipped away and out of sight. This excursion pairs well with a trip to the Emerald Crystal Lagoon.
