Review

Located on the shore of Lake Sarmiento, Tierra Patagonia awes you right as you walk in the door with a perfectly framed view of the Paine Massif (the same inspiring view can be seen from every room of the hotel). Its structure, all organic curves that mimic the surrounding landscapes, is almost entirely hidden from outside view (while you are inside the National Park, your guide might point to the lake in the distance and tempt you to pick out the building). Outside, it is typical Patagonian grasslands filled with resident Patagonia guanacos. Inside, the walls are made of local wood and natural materials from the region, creating a warm and inviting environment.

Days are spent at your desired pace and can include a full day or half day excursions - upon arrival, you will be met by the experience team to go over your interests and fitness level. All activities will be in small groups with other guests, but the team does a fantastic job of matching activity level and preferences. Choices range from boat trips to see the Grey Glacier, afternoon horseback rides in private estancias, mountain biking in the Patagonia grasslands and hikes ranging from easy hour jaunts to full-day treks. Travelers looking for private guides should reach out to their Trip Designer, or look into nearby Awasi Patagonia.

Note: For those looking for a real challenge, there is no better choice than the hike to the Base of the Towers. 14 miles round-trip, the hike culminates at the base of the most iconic peaks in the Paine Massif.

The spa is typically full in the late afternoons, particularly the heated full-sized lap pool and outdoor Jacuzzi with panoramic views of Torres del Paine. Evenings are best spent curled up with a glass of wine on one of the sitting area’s sofas, sharing stories around the fire with new friends. All forty rooms have soaring views of the lake and are appointed with luxurious feather beds and soaking tubs. Family rooms can be created for those who would like to connect, and the hotel also has two larger one-bedroom suites (the lodge accepts children aged ten or above).

The surroundings of the lodge are only accessible to guests of the property, and Tierra has private access to some of the most scenic horseback riding estancias in the region–creating a special and exclusive experience. The wildlife opportunities are plentiful, from the prevalent guanacos to rheas (Ostrich-like birds) to foxes and pumas. Considering all of this and its location (on a private concession just outside the entrance of Torres del Paine National Park) coupled with the magnificent views of the Paine Massif–Tierra Patagonia is one of the best home bases to explore Chilean Patagonia.
