Lima

Traditional crafts, which have a folk-art quality, are sold in the markets, but be sure to splurge on contemporary artisanal pieces, which are more consistent in quality and more fashionable. Shops carrying a range of the best goods available, from housewares and jewelry to knits, include Dédalo, Indigo and the Larcomar mall. Look for items that incorporate red and black huayruro seeds, which are considered to be good luck – but only when given as a gift (Ilaria, Indigo, Cabuchon and Dédalo use them artfully). Legend says that just one seed in your wallet means you will never run out of money. Avenida La Paz is where you’ll find antiques and pawn shops, a few of which still have for sale everything from ancient armor to conquistadors’ silver swords. Most of the shops accept credit cards, but they may give you a discount if you pay cash.
