Located in what used to be the hall for the emperor’s coach at the Burgtheater, this restaurant may not be the easiest to find, but it’s one of Vienna’s most romantic. The candlelit space—with massive carved-wood doors, marble columns and restored stucco—draws couples celebrating special occasions as well as theatergoers treating themselves before a performance. The menu successfully combines traditional and modern Austrian cuisine, including simply prepared fish dishes and seasonal hearty fare, like roasted young boar or crispy duck with lingonberry sauce. In the summer, there are tables on the terrace overlooking the Ring boulevard and City Hall. Reservations are essential, particularly on performance nights. Closed Sunday.
