The three Pinakothek museums are located in Munich’s so-called Kunstreal, the arts district that also holds the Lenbachhaus and Sammlung Brandhorst. There are three Pinakotheken and all are worth a visit.
The Alte Pinakothek, one of the world’s oldest galleries focused around a collections of Old Masters (including famous works by Dürer, Rembrandt and Giotto).
The Neue Pinakothek focuses on 18th- and 19th-century European art.
The Pinakothek der Moderne holds an incredible modern art collection (it’s especially strong in German Expressionism), displaying collection of 20th- and 21st-century art, architecture, design and paper works. The ground floor holds the impressive art collection, with pieces from Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, David Hockney and more. The design collection spans exhibits on computer culture, jewelry, furniture and beyond, while the architecture museum includes the various stages of notable architectural feats from blueprints and drawings to computer animations.
While in this area, modern art enthusiasts should also check out the Museum Brandhorst.
