Masseria Torre Maizza

This appealing, small-scale Rocco Forte resort in northeastern Puglia provides stylish accommodations and a prime location for accessing some of the region’s top sites and activities.

This 40-suite Rocco Forte property, which is located on the grounds of a fully restored 16th-century masseria (farmhouse), is a more intimate, smaller-scale option to nearby Borgo Egnazia. Set amid olive groves and gardens with views to the Adriatic in the distance, it offers a nine-hole golf course, 20-meter pool, a private beach club with a restaurant, a petite outdoor gym near the pool, and a small spa and boutique. Boxy, light-filled rooms with high ceilings, designed by Olga Polizzi, are spacious and have shuttered doors and windows and local design touches such as ceramic pieces from regional producers. Bathrooms feature large soaking tubs set next to a glass wall, along with plush bathrobes, striped flip-flops and espresso machines. End suites with golf course views away from the dining area and rooftop bar/terrace and pool may be quieter and offer more privacy. The Torre Suite in the masseria tower has two bedrooms and its own private plunge pool and terrace with lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the Adriatic in the distance. For a larger family or group, the Alberobello Wing can accommodate up to 10, with spacious living and dining areas and countryside (and golf course) views.

The restaurant, Carosello, serves a thoughtful menu of local dishes that will appeal to anyone on a Mediterranean diet: fresh-caught fish, local produce, plus plenty of simple pastas, cheeses and the obligatory tiramisu. If you’re someone who likes pizza and prosecco by the pool, then you’ll be content here. The breakfast spread is also worth getting up for, with an array of options for even the pickiest eater—a perfectly poached egg was memorable. A complimentary boat excursion with other guests is offered for those interested in getting out on the water to see nearby Polignano and Monopoli, but private charters can also be arranged, along with a host of other activities that will allow you to experience the region—whether your interests run from caves and cliff-diving to art history and architecture.

Great for couples or families with kids 10 and up looking to relax by the pool or on the golf course and a good base from which to explore the region.
