Belem is most famous for the Belem Tower and the Monument of Discoveries, but also the Pasteis de Belem (Rua de Belem) for delicious, world-famous custard tarts (just a short walk away from the quirky <a title="Museum of Coaches" href="https://www.indagare.com/destinations/europe/potugal/portugal/lisbon/activities/museum-coaches/">Museum of Coaches</a>). Also worth checking out is the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery (Praca do Imperio), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This museum honors the tiles that adorn facades throughout Portugal and have been a national icon since the Middle Ages.

Museu Nacional do Azulejo

Located in the center of the city in Chiado, the ruins of the Carmo convent offer a striking legacy of the massive earthquake that nearly wiped Lisbon off the map in 1755. Originally built in 1389, the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was destroyed by the magnitude 9 earthquake; the Gothic complex’s roof caved in, leaving only its pillars and arches. Most of the city was eventually rebuilt (with seismically robust edifices, of course), but this site — which was the largest church in the capital at the time of the tragedy — was purposefully left roofless as a reminder of the natural disaster. Today, in addition to the remains of the nave open to the sky, you can visit the Carmo Archaeological Museum with a collection of tombs (including King Ferdinand I’s), 13th-century coins, South American mummies, and other archeological bits and bobs.

Carmo Convent

A former mid-19th-century complex of factories and manufacturing outlets, LX Factory is today a reinvented compound consisting of restaurants, cafés, shops and markets. With buildings adorned with fascinating graffiti, locals and tourists mingling, excellent shopping and delicious bites, this is a not-to-be-missed aspect of today’s Lisbon.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Located in the heart of the most charming area of Lisbon, between the bohemian Bairro Alto and chic Chiado neighborhoods, the hotel Bairro Alto has been a favorite retreat and watering hole for decades. It reopened in late summer 2019 after a multi-year renovation, during which two adjoining buildings were added to the original ones that face the Praça Luís de Camões. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Maura masterminded the merger of the four historic 18th-century buildings, which now feature 87 guest rooms and multiple suites.
The design respects historical elements but adds refreshing nods to today’s Portugal. Fabulous embroidered panels with swans (birds are of the hotel’s motifs) line the hallways, and the wood-paneled Mezzanine bar features mid-century furniture that evokes a private Lisbon apartment. An incredible handmade wall hanging that spans multiple floors is displayed in one of the interior stairwells.
The fifth-floor rooftop restaurant, BAHR, has views over Lisbon’s red roofs to the Tagus River as does its neighboring bar, probably the loveliest roof-top bar in town. Food is contemporary Portuguese, done well, but save room for a visit to the pastry shop with its lines of traditional Portuguese pastries.
There is a small spa, where the spa therapists are earning raves, and the hotel is clearly the place to stay for those who believe in the old adage: location, location, location.

Bairro Alto

Housed in a renovated townhouse, Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden is a luxurious boutique option just steps from Lisbon’s best shopping. A three year renovation and expansion added a new wing to the property, and the hotel’s design displays an eclectic vision that emphasizes traditional touches but does not forego modern luxuries. Each of the 48 rooms is decorated in sophisticated, dark hues that are occasionally interrupted with a splash of color. Sprinkled throughout the accommodations are antique furnishings and historic paintings, but all rooms have satellite TV and WiFi. Bathrooms are sleek and modern, with black and white marble tiles, huge soaking tubs in certain rooms and glass-enclosed showers.

The hotel has a small elevated pool surrounded by greenery and sleek loungers where afternoon tea or cocktails can be served. The hotel’s chic restaurant, Sítio Valverde offers a bountiful buffet for breakfast and a traditional Portuguese menu at lunch and dinner, coupled with an extensive wine list. Throughout the year, the hotel plays host to a number of cultural programs, such as music nights with jazz or fado in the courtyard and bar. For those looking to relax or exercise, there is also a spa treatment room and small gym.

Porto, a hilly city along the river, looks very similar to Lisbon but has a feel that is entirely its own. Recent international interest and local creatives have revived the area with an energetic design scene you won’t find anywhere else. Porto’s greatest attraction is, however, its world-famous port, which you can experience in local restaurants, guiding tastings and a tour of the Gaia wine caves.
